W-League News Release
Wednesday, June 4, 2014
TAMPA, Fla. – The W-League announced its third Team of the Week for the 2014 season today, with Dayton Dutch Lions and U.S. U20 Women’s National Team midfielder Rose Lavelle chosen as Player of the Week after she had one of the most dominant weeks in recent W-League history. Lavelle, preparing for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Canada in August, tallied four goals and two assists in Dayton’s 6-2 win against Atlanta days after scoring the game-winner in a 1-0 victory against Charlotte.
The two-win week vaulted the Dutch Lions into a tie for second place in the Southeastern Conference, and also helped goalkeeper Ayanna Parker join Lavelle on the Team of the Week after earning the shutout against Charlotte and adding another perfect 45 minutes against Atlanta.
Also selected to the Team of the Week midfield was Washington’s Lina Granados, who tallied the first hat trick in club history in Sunday’s victory at the New York Magic. Another Spirit Reserves midfielder – Virginia Tech’s Katie Yensen – was also chosen after she scored the game-winner in a crucial Northeastern Conference victory against the New Jersey Wildcats and added a goal and an assist at New York.
Ottawa’s Arin Gilliland, who scored the game-winner against K-W United, and Blakely Mattern of Carolina Elite, who scored twice in two minutes to overturn a late 1-0 deficit at the Gulf Coast Texans, round out the midfield selections.
The two forward selections are led by Stefanie Scholz of the North Jersey Valkyries, who tallied all three in a 3-1 victory at Long Island. She is joined by Anisa Guajardo of the Bay Area Breeze, who scored twice and added an assist in a 1-0-1 week for the Breeze.
The Team of the Week defense includes Laval’s Kelsey Wilson for the second consecutive week after she held Quebec’s offense in check and scored a goal in a 2-0 Comets victory. LA Blues star Abby Dahlkemper was also selected after scoring the game-winner in a 2-0 victory against the Colorado Pride, while Toronto’s Melanie Pickert earned a spot after scoring a goal in a 2-0 shutout win against London.
W-League action continues this week with 15 games on the schedule, including important early-season rematches that see the New Jersey Wildcats travel to face the Spirit Reserves on Saturday and the Laval Comets host the Toronto Lady Lynx on Sunday.
