ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Silverbacks scored a goal late but were unable to pull find an equalizer as they fell to the Carolina Elite Cobras 2-1 on a rainy Friday night at Silverbacks Park.
The Silverbacks (0-3-0) and the Cobras (2-0-0) both got off to slow starts and were not able to get much going in the first half. Carolina was able to find the scoreboard first late in the 45th minute when forward Savannah McCaskill dribbled through the Silverbacks’ defense to find the upper 90, sending the Cobras into the locker room up 1-0 at halftime.
The second goal for Carolina came in the 83rd minute when forward Stephanie Devita put her right foot out to knock home a cross in from India Trotter.
The Silverbacks gave the fans something to cheer for in the 90th minute when Rebecca Van Horn put home Atlanta’s lone goal of the night off an assist from Hannah Huizenga.
Atlanta had many chances in the second half, but the Cobras’ defense caught the Silverbacks offsides four times and goalkeeper Elizabeth Hull made four great saves to keep the scoring margin in Carolina’s favor.
The Silverbacks will be back in action at Silverbacks Park next Friday night, June 6, against the Dayton Dutch Lions. Tickets are still on sale on the women’s page of atlantasilverbacksfc.com. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
