SEDONA, Ariz. – The LA Blues kicked off the 2014 W-League season in fashion as they routed the Sedona FC Strikers 9-0 on Friday night.
While the Blues struggled to find their rhythm early, it didn’t take long to get rolling. Mele French opened the scoring in the 23rd minute off a ball from Taylor Smith, and French then returned the favor with 10 minutes remaining in the half, and set up Smith to double the lead.
With nine minutes remaining in the first half Kandace Wilson added a third goal, and Smith scored her second of the night to make it 4-0 at halftime.
The Blues kept their form going into the second half and Kayla Mills scored in the 56th minute to stretch the Blues’ lead to 5 unanswered goals. With 15 minutes to go the Blues drew a foul inside the penalty area, and a penalty kick was awarded. Sarah Killion buried the ball from the spot to make it 6-0.
Wilson scored two goals in two minutes to complete her hat trick for an 8-0 lead before Maren Heller finished off the Strikers 9-0 in the final seconds of the match.
