BOYDS, Md. – The Washington Spirit Reserves have signed defender Cecilie Sandvej, who appeared for the NWSL's Spirit during the 2014 preseason and was waived by the club today.
The Danish international and Australian W-League veteran earned minutes at outside back in each of the Spirit’s three preseason matches, but did not appear in any NWSL games this season.
“We are excited Cecilie will stay with us and play on the reserves for the W-League season. She will make a big impact and gain quality minutes she needs to continue her development,” Spirit Head Coach Mark Parsons said.
Sandvej will be a strong addition to the Spirit Reserves, who are looking to bring home the W-League title after losing 3-2 in overtime in the semifinal last year against the Pali Blues.
“Having the opportunity to add a top caliber player like Cecilie is every W-league manager or coach's dream. Her tactical awareness, combined with speed and finesse presents every forward in this league with a huge challenge,” Spirit Reserves general manager Tim Schweitzer said. “Cecilie's leadership and experience are a perfect fit with the players we have already in our defensive third, and we are fortunate to have her.”
Sandvej will kick off the Spirit Reserves season against the Braddock Road Stars Elite on May 17 at 3 p.m. at the Maryland Soccerplex in a doubleheader with the Spirit, who take on the Western New York Flash at 6:30 p.m.
