PLAINVIEW, N.Y. - The Long Island Rough Riders opened the 2014 W-League season with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at home against their longtime rivals, the New York Magic.
The first half began with a great save by Rough Riders goalkeeper Diana Poulin in the sixth minute of play. Poulin added three more saves in the half as the teams traded scoring opportunities.
In the second half the Rough Riders came out with more intensity, dominated in possession and had some good chances. Their best opportunities came in the last two minutes of play where they had four great scoring chances, only to come up short. Long Island outshot the Magic 13-6 in the match, with midfielder Casie Ludemann leading the way with three attempts.
The Rough Riders defense, led by Susan Alber-Weber, Georgia Kearney-Perry and Jenna Peveraro had a strong all-around showing, not allowing a shot in the second half. Serina Kashimmoto and Jadranka Pavicevic led the Magic with two shots apiece.
New York's defense was anchored by Shani Nakhid-Schuster, Lorina White and Corinne Brady, with keeper Sam Depken called upon to make five saves to preserve the shutout.
The Magic are on the road again next Saturday at the New Jersey Wildcats, while the Rough Riders will host the Wildcats on Sunday.
