LAVAL, Quebec - The Laval Comets announced the signing of Canada Women's National Team midfielder Melissa Busque and 2013 W-League Goalkeeper of the Year Geneviève Richard for the 2014 W-League season.
Busque, who made her debut for senior national team in 2013, will bring the speed and the character Comets this year. The 2013 W-League All-Western Conference selection can play in the middle or outside and will be a constant threat to opposing defenders. Busque played for the Seattle Sounders Women in 2013, recording three goals and an assist in 10 games.
"Melissa is fast and has a lot of determination, and that is what we have needed in the past," Laval CEO Philippe Ciarlo said. "Melissa is a go-getter; she wants the ball in the box and that's a good thing. Our goal is to mentor young players with experience who have won in their careers."
Richard returns to the Comets intent on earning a trip to the W-League Championship for a second consectuive season. She was dominant in 2013 as she allowed only six goals in 11 games with six shutouts.
"Genevieve was with us last season and it was a special season," Ciarlo said. "She was a major factor in our success in 2013. The fact that she is only 22 gives us hope that we will have her for several seasons, unless she turn pro."
Both signings are pending W-League approval. For more information about the Laval Comets visit www.lavalcometes.com.
