TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues was deeply saddened to hear of the death of former Indiana Blast and Indiana Blaze owner Alex Morris, who passed away on Saturday after a battle with colon cancer.
“We are all greatly disappointed to hear of Alex’s death,” USL President Tim Holt said. “Alex was one of the great characters in USL history, and the Morris family did an outstanding job of bringing a high level of men’s and women’s soccer to Indianapolis. We send our condolences to his family, and all of the friends that he made over a full and rich life.”
Morris founded both the Blast and the Blaze in 1997, with the Blast beginning in the D-3 Pro League before the club joined the A-League in 1999 after having claimed the North Central Division title in 1998. The Blaze, meanwhile, claimed a pair of W-League 2 Midwest Division titles in 1999 and 2000, with Joy Aschenbrener being named the league MVP in 1999.
