LAVAL, Quebec - The Laval Comets announced today the signing of Canadian National Team standouts Rhian Wilkinson and Josée Bélanger for the 2014 W-League season, pending league approval.
With more than 150 international matches played since 2003, Wilkinson bring brings experience and maturity to the Comets. Equally effecctive from any position on the field, Wilkinson will open up many options for the Laval coaches. She most recently played for the NWSL's Boston Breakers in 2013 and has also featured for LSK Norway, the Ottawa Fury and Lakeshore.
"Rhian is fast, strong and has lots of character," Laval CEO Philippe Ciarlo said. "I think this acquisition is a perfect marriage considering our new agreement with the Quebec Soccer Federation. In addition to being an important part of the team, she will be the perfect example for our young players."
Bélanger, also a member of the Canadian Women's National Team, is a fast and dangerous attacker. She was previously signed by the Comets, but a knee injury prevented her from playing in Laval. She later continued her W-League career with the Quebec City Amiral, and also wore the green and gold jersey of the University of Sherbrooke.
"We are rebuilding our attack for 2014 and Josée helps us to replace Nkem Ezurike (drafted by Boston of the NWSL) and Valerie Sanderson and Amandine Pierre- Louis, who will be playing in the U20 Women's World Cup."
