WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Charlotte Eagles defeated Wilmington Hammerheads FC 2-0 at Legion Stadium on Saturday night. Midfielders Wells Thompson and Drew Yates led the Eagles to victory with a goal each in the second half.

Midfielder Daniel Lovitz had several shots on Eagles goalkeeper Brock Duckworth throughout the night, but none found the back of the net to give the Hammerheads the goals they needed to find victory that would continue the club's undefeated start to the season.

The Hammerheads' best chance ofthe first half came just before halftime off a header by Sammy Ochoa in the penalty area from a volley by Lovitz. The Eagles were given the chance to break the deadlock soon after with minutes left in the first half off a free kick just outside the penalty area, but the shot by Thompson missed the target.

The first goal of the match came in the 57th minute as Thompson found an open gap outside the penalty area and found the back of the net. Charlotte defender Jonathan Leathers almost added to his side's lead in the 65th minute that was denied by a diving stop by Hammerheads goalkeeper Quillan Roberts.

Lovitz had the fans on their feet with two of his best attempts on goal of the night with a diving header in the penalty area near the left post and a hard shot from outside the penalty area with 10 minutes remaining in the match, both saved by finger tips of Charlotte goalkeeper Brock Duckworth.

The Eagles would get an insurance goal in stoppage time as Yates found the back of the net shortly after coming on as a substitute to make it 2-0.

Wilmington Hammerheads FC will host its next match against the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday, May 3 at Legion Stadium. For further information regarding the Hammerheads, please call (910) 777-2111 or visit www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com.
