Wednesday, April 23, 2014
TAMPA, Fla. – W-20, the premier North American under-20 women’s league, released its divisional alignment and schedule for 2014 today, with the action slated to kick off for the 86-game regular season on Friday, May 30.
The 2014 W-20 season features 20 teams aligned in four regional divisions – Midwest, North Atlantic, South Atlantic and Southeast - playing 8-10 regular season matches from May through July, with a national championship set for late July.
“As W-20 moves into year two we are excited by the progress the league has enjoyed, and the most rewarding element has been the new playing and development opportunities created by the close relationship between W-20 and W-League teams,” W-League & W-20 Senior Director Amanda Duffy said. “As more teams embrace W-20’s role in the women’s soccer pyramid in North America, more players stand to benefit from having a clearly defined path from the youth ranks to the professional level.”
W-20 currently features six teams that serve as reserve teams for W-League clubs, including the Carolina Elite Cobras, the Gulf Coast Texans, the London Gryphons, the Ottawa Fury, the Toronto Lady Lynx, and the Washington Spirit Academy (Washington Spirit Reserves). The Washington Spirit Reserves of the W-League serve in the same capacity for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

W-20 is the result of a rebranding the premier North American under-20 women’s league, previously known as the Super-20 Women. W-20 aligns operationally with the W-League to benefit from the established infrastructure of the first and longest standing women’s league in North America, which emphasizes quality ownership, league standards and player development.
W-20 enjoyed a memorable first season in 2013, with 20 teams fighting for spots at the W-20 Championship presented by Nike, which was held at the pristine IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Six teams qualified for the event, with the Kalamazoo Kingdom capturing the inaugural title.
The Carolina Elite Cobras – a 2013 championship qualifier – host the Atlanta Metros in Southeast Division action as the season kicks off on Friday, May 30. The Cobras then travel to face the Gulf Coast Texans on Saturday, May 31, in a W-20/W-League doubleheader.
The regular season closes on Sunday, July 13 when the Gulf Coast Texans host the Atlanta Metros, Keystone Athletic SC welcomes the Ottawa Fury, and Triangle FC Alliance faces the Washington Spirit Academy.
