SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield Demize Head Coach Ian Henry has announced the signing of center midfielder, Devon Newport. A native of Springfield, Mo., Newport most recently played for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, in Edwardsville, Ill.
In 2008, as a Glendale High School Senior, Newport was named First Team All-State and Missouri Offensive Player of the Year. He began his college soccer career at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, and was part of an A10 Champion team his freshman year and tied for leading goal scorer as a sophomore.
After transferring to SIU-Edwardsville, his team finished as Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) regular season and tournament runner-up and he was named to the Second Team All-MVC as a senior. Newport was part of the U19 State Champion and Regional semi-finalist team in 2010 and National runner-up in 2011 as a summer college player with St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club.
“I’m excited to be playing for my hometown PDL team for the first time. Coach Henry is making an impact on the development of this team,” said Newport, “and the Demize is an organization where I will be challenged and develop to the next level. I’m excited to see what this team can do.”
The Demize's season opener is on May 17 at 7 p.m., at Cooper Complex, Springfield, Mo., against the Des Moines Menace. Plan to attend and meet Newport and the other Demize players.
