PITTSBURGH, Pa. – On a beautiful night the Pittsburgh Riverhounds remained unbeaten at Chartiers Valley Stadium as they shut out F.C. New York for a 2-0 victory on Saturday night.
2010 USL-2 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton headed home the game-winner in the third minute before an individual effort from Matt Fondy provided the Riverhounds with an insurance goal in the 48th minute.
A piercing diagonal ball from Matt Tuttle proved to be the game’s key moment. Tuttle received a pass from center back Louie Rolko on the left flank and played a well-driven ball to the right corner behind New York’s defense. Fellow midfielder Tommy Gray tracked down the ball just before the goal line, took a touch inside and delivered a quality cross over the retreating defenders. Deighton slashed through the penalty area to head home Gray’s service to put the Hounds up for good.
The Riverhounds controlled the tempo of the match for the remainder of the first half and continued to pressure New York’s end. Deighton, Fondy and Tuttle had opportunities to convert, but F.C. New York’s goalkeeper Derby Carrillo was in good position to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
But the Riverhounds (2-3-2) wasted little time to add their second goal on the night in the second half. An attempted clearance by F.C. New York (1-4-2) landed at the feet of Fondy thirty yards from goal, and after collecting the bouncing ball with ease, Fondy faked a shot and cut back to his left. Gracefully stepping up to the ball Fondy struck a low left-footed shot across his body, tucking his shot just inside the upright to bring the crowd of 1,421 to their feet.
The Riverhounds return to Chartiers Valley Stadium on Sunday evening to host the Los Angeles Blues (4-2-2). The game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
F.C. New York will travel to take on the Richmond Kickers (6-0-1) next Saturday at City Stadium.
