TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week 2 of the 2014 season on Tuesday with the Richmond Kickers’ George Davis IV being named Player of the Week as he scored twice to help his side earn a 2-2 draw on the road against the Charleston Battery.
Davis, a 2013 All-League pick, and fellow Team of the Week selection Collin Martin, on loan from D.C. United, combined on both of the Kickers’ goals against the Battery. Davis opened the scoring in the 14th minute as he ran onto an excellent through ball by Martin before finishing low into the right corner. Davis then salvaged a point for the Kickers in the 67th minute as his flicked near-post header from Martin’s cross made it 2-2.
The Battery also had a pair of players selected to the team, with midfielders Jarad van Schaik and Amadou Sanyang both rewarded for solid performances. Van Schaik had a hand in both Charleston goals as he scored the first and then delivered an excellent free kick for Sanyang to head home.
Sacramento Republic FC led all teams with three selections after it took a 1-1 draw on the road against the LA Galaxy II. Forward Justin Braun, who scored the first goal in club history, was joined by goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and defender Harrison Delbridge, with Gleeson in particular standing out as he made five saves to keep Republic FC in the game early.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds also earned a pair of selections with on-loan Houston Dynamo defender Anthony Arena and midfielder Anthony Obodai named to the team. Obodai, in particular, had a strong game as he helped break up numerous Orlando attacks and distributed well from the center of midfield.
The teams is completed by Orlando City’s Luke Boden, who earns selection for a second consecutive week after recording his first league goal in more than a year to allow the Lions to take a 1-1 draw with the Riverhounds. Galaxy II defender Oscar Sorto was also selected after a solid performance at full back in his side’s 1-1 draw with Sacramento.
The 2014 USL PRO season continues on Friday night as 2013 USL PRO runner-up the Charlotte Eagles make their first appearance as they host the Dayton Dutch Lions. OKC Energy FC is also set to make its debut on Saturday night as it visits the Orange County Blues FC, while the Wilmington Hammerheads host the Harrisburg City Islanders in the season opener for both teams.
