TUKWILA, Wash. – The Seattle Sounders Women have signed a pair of Elon University stars for the 2014 W-League season. Senior midfielders Olivia Mackey and Kimmie Krauss join the Sounders after leading Elon to a second-place finish in the Southern Conference.
Mackey, 22, led the Phoenix with eight assists. The 5-foot-3 midfielder also scored two goals. Krauss, 21, finished second best on the team with seven assists. Krauss and Mackey led in minutes played this past fall for their North Carolina-based university.
“We've been monitoring the progress of Olivia and Kimmie for awhile,” Head Coach Hubert Busby Jr. said. “We are pleased they are joining us this season in Seattle. Both come from a good program that produces quality players and people. They are technically sound players that will add depth to our squad.”
Mackey, a Virginia native, started all four years at Elon, totaling 16 assists in her career.
“Signing with the Sounders is very exciting," Mackey said. "I've waited my entire soccer career for an opportunity like this, and I can't wait to get out there and get started. I feel very lucky.”
A New Jersey native, Krauss was a regular starter for four seasons at Elon, capping her career by starting every match and leading field players in minutes played during her senior year. She totaled five goals and 15 assists in her career.
The two East-Coasters are eager to be a part of the soccer passion in Seattle.
“I've heard that Seattle has an incredible soccer environment, with a lot of fans both on the women's and men's side," Mackey said. "I'm excited to play in an area that's as passionate about the sport as I am.”
“I have heard the Sounders are one of the best teams to play on partly because of their fans," Krauss said. "I cannot wait to feel that adrenaline rush seeing the wonderful support Seattle has at the Starfire Stadium.”
Mackey and Krauss are expected to join the team in early May.
