CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Eagles are excited to announce the signing of former MLS midfielder Wells Thompson.
Thompson, 30, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina finished his four-year career at Wake Forest with 16 goals and 10 assists. He led the Demon Deacons to the 2006 NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history. Thompson earned ACC All-Tournament honors as a senior and was also named to the ACC All-Freshman team in 2003.
"To add a player like Wells brings not only a wealth of soccer experience, but a leader on and off the field," said Jeremy Auyer, Eagles GM.
Thompson joins the Eagles after a seven-year MLS career with the New England Revolution, Colorado Rapids and Chicago Fire. Thompson was drafted fifth overall by the Revolution in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft and helped the club win the 2007 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
In 2010 Thompson was traded to the Colorado Rapids. He made 27 appearances for the Rapids scoring five goals as the team captured the 2010 MLS Cup against FC Dallas. After making 75 appearances for the Rapids, Thompson was dealt to the Chicago Fire in 2012.
He joins fellow former Demon Deacon Ben Newnam on the 2014 squad.
The Eagles will kick off their 2014 USL PRO season against the Dayton Dutch Lions on Saturday, April 4th at Queens Sports Complex. Tickets can be purchased at www.charlotteeagles.com.
