CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The 11th edition of the Carolina Challenge Cup kicks off on Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island with a doubleheader of Major League Soccer action. At 5 p.m., D.C. United takes on the Houston Dynamo, then at 7:15 p.m. USL PRO's Charleston Battery square off against MLS’s Seattle Sounders FC.
Carolina Challenge Cup tickets are included in all 2014 Charleston Battery season ticket packages. A limited number of individual and group Carolina Challenge Cup Tickets starting at $15 are still available by calling (843) 971-GOAL (4625) or at www.charlestonbattery.com; game tickets include both matches.
Seattle Sounders FC's roster includes U.S. Men’s National Team defenders Brad Evans and DeAndre Yedlin, plus three former Charleston Battery players, Osvaldo Alonso, Lamar Neagle and Alex Caskey.
Saturday’s game against the Sounders is the first meeting between the teams since the 2008 U.S. Open Cup semifinal when Seattle Sounders were still playing in USL. The Battery won that match via a penalty shootout, with the club's place in the final the last time a lower-division side accomplished that feat in the tournament's modern era.
The Carolina Challenge Cup is the premier preseason tournament in the United States. Each spring for the past 10 years the Battery have been joined by three teams from Major League Soccer for the round-robin competition.
The tournament continues on Wednesday, Feb 26 with Seattle vs Houston (5 p.m.) and Charleston Battery vs D.C. United (7:15 p.m.). The Carolina Challenge Cup concludes on Saturday, March 1 with D.C. United vs Seattle Sounders (5 p.m.) followed by Charleston Battery vs Houston Dynamo (7:15 p.m.).
