WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Hammerheads welcomed FC New York into Legion Stadium and brought home a win to keep their home record perfect.
The game was closer than the 3-1 score indicates. The Hammers grabbed the lead early when Budnyy penetrated New York’s defense all the way to the endline and passed back to Chris Banks who scooted the ball past the keeper in the 14th minute.
New York answered back almost immediately when Brito Graciano put the ball past Hammerhead goalie Duckworth aided by a defensive error.
The early scoring frenzy was capped with another Hammerheads goal by Banks in the 18th minute. The Hammerheads quickly moved the ball up field to answer and regain the lead that would hold through the half.
Paul Nicholson had a shot miss just right in the 22nd minute, followed by Manny Guzman’s strong shot that sailed over the crossbar.
New York came out in the second half with energy that caught the Hammerheads on their heels. New York rarely lost possession of the ball and kept it on the Hammerheads’ defensive end of the field for the majority of the second half.
New York had a few good looks early on; one that was tipped over the crossbar by Brock Duckworth in the 51st minute. New York didn’t get any other quality looks at goal till late in the half.
Chris Spendlove was given a yellow card in the 83rd minute for a slide tackle which gave New York the first of two free kicks. The first bounced around in box before being cleared by Hammerhead defense. The second free kick came in the 86th minute which was easily blocked by the Hammerheads’ wall.
In the 89th minute Hammerhead forward Jyler Noviello found the back of the net on a break away down the right side, giving the Hammerheads a 3-1 lead.
After 3 minutes of stoppage time, the Hammerheads emerged victorious and moving their record to 3-1-0.
