TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week 21 of the season on Tuesday, with Charlotte Eagles midfielder Jorge Herrera earning Player of the Week honors after scoring three goals in two games as the Eagles clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2009. Herrera led Charlotte to victories against the Harrisburg City Islanders and Antigua Barracuda FC as the Eagles moved into fifth place in the USL PRO standings.
Herrera had the winning goal as the Eagles took a 2-1 victory against Harrisburg Wednesday, putting away a finish on a counter-attack. He then opened the scoring for Charlotte in its win against Antigua, and added a second in the 55th minute as the Eagles clinched their place in the playoffs. Herrera has now scored 10 goals in 21 games this season while also providing veteran leadership for the young squad.
Joining Herrera in the Team of the Week’s midfield is teammate Drew Yates, who had a goal and two assists in Charlotte’s win against Antigua. The midfield quartet is completed by Richmond’s Brian Ownby, who scored twice in the Kickers’ victory against Dayton, and Pittsburgh’s Rob Vincent, whose outstanding long-range effort helped the Riverhounds get past VSI Tampa Bay FC and claim a place in the playoffs.
Harrisburg’s Lucky Mkosana leads the attacking trio after scoring his second hat trick of the season in a 3-1 win against Tampa Bay on Saturday night. The Zimbabwean forward now has 13 goals this season, and has scored 10 in his past seven games. Joining him are Los Angeles’ Matt Fondy, who had a pair of goals in the Blues’ 2-1 win against Charleston, and Wilmington’s Cody Arnoux, whose late goal kept the Hammerheads’ playoff hopes alive with a win against Dayton.
The Orlando duo of Rob Valentino and Renan Boufleur lead the defensive trio, with both scoring goals as the Lions took victories against VSI Tampa Bay FC and the Seattle Sounders Reserves. Charleston’s Emmanuel Adjetey also earned selection after putting in a solid performance against Phoenix in the Battery’s win on the west coast, while Rochester’s Brandon Miller claimed goalkeeping honors after recording a shutout in the Rhinos’ 1-0 win against Pittsburgh.
