HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Harrisburg City Islanders won their home opener against the Rochester Rhinos 1-0 at Skyline Sports Complex on Tuesday night as Jose Angulo was the hero of the night, scoring the game-winning goal to give the Islanders their first win of the season. Goalkeeper Chase Harrison also recorded six saves for his first shutout of the season.
Rochester opened the game strongly, pressuring the City Islanders’ defense with shots and corner kicks in the first five minutes. But it wouldn’t take long for the City Islanders to turn the tables as in the seventh minute Angulo volleyed a ball from the Islanders’ backline that struck the top of the crossbar.
Angulo wouldn’t miss his next opportunity as he finished a Nelson Becerra free kick from 35 yards out, giving the Islanders’ a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. The Rhinos bounced back quickly, forcing Harrison into a beautiful diving save five minutes later to deny a left-footed strike from the Rhinos’ Anthony Hamilton.
The City Islanders could have added to their lead early in the second half, Becerra providing a smooth through ball to Angulo who would shoot with the outside of his foot shot only to miss the goal by inches. Becerra continued his pinpoint distribution by crossing a ball to Jerrit Thayer who would volley and force Rhinos’ goalkeeper Ryan Kenny into a remarkable diving save.
As time began to run out, the Rhinos’ offense became more dangerous. In the 74th minute, Tony Donatelli bent a free kick from his powerful left foot, only to hit the goal’s side-netting. Just minutes later, the Rhinos would continue the pressure as Donatelli launched a missle that would bounce off of Chase Harrison. JC Banks would get the rebound and shoot, only to find the outside of the post. AndrewHoxie had Rochester’s final chance, but his shot just missed the top corner of the net.
The next home City Islanders’ game of the season is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Saturday at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island against the Richmond Kickers.
