FT. MYERS, Fla. - Major Beach Soccer’s Ft. Myers Beach qualifier will be held this Saturday and Sunday continuing a yearly tradition that began in 1991. The Ft. Myers Beach qualifier is the last of three tournaments in Florida that enables teams to qualify for the MBS National Championship in Clearwater held in December.
This year’s edition of MBS Ft. Myers will include more than 30 teams and feature age divisions from U14 Men, U18 Men's and Women's, Men and Women’s Open, and Co-Ed Open. Ft. Myers is the last chance for teams to book their trip to the championship where the gorgeous sand and warm gulf waters promise a great display of beach soccer.
Games are played in three 10-minute periods with a 5v5 format. Rosters are no more than 10 players and the game is officiated under the FIFA Beach Soccer guidelines. Players are required to be either barefoot or in socks; no shoes are allowed. Games are typically high scoring and feature a number of exciting rule changes from the grass version of the world’s favorite game to promote nonstop action.
As summer enters its hottest days it is important that players and spectators take the necessary actions to protect their health.
“Ft. Myers is a lovely area with a beautiful beach, but it is also very hot,” MBS Director Peter Mellor said. “There will be water provided at the fields, but players and spectators should also make sure they’re doing enough off the field to stay hydrated and healthy.”
Ft. Myers Beach qualifying matches will take place across three fields from sun up to sun down. All the fields will be set up behind the Holiday Inn.
Ft. Myers is home to more than just a beach. The surrounding area hosts many other options for families, ranging from national parks and museums to a thriving nightlife.
