WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Wilmington Hammerheads continued their undefeated streak at Legion Stadium on Saturday as they claimed a 2-1 victory against the Harrisburg City Islanders as Cody Arnoux scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute. Wilmington had held a halftime lead through Daniel Steres, and Harrisburg hit back with 16 minutes to go through Sainey Touray’s 10th goal of the season, only for Arnoux’s late header to grab all three points.
There were few chances early on, and the first clear opportunity didn’t arrive until the 26th minute. Wilmington’s Gareth Evans drove a free kick into the penalty area for an opportunity for Richard Isberner, how headed just inches above the crossbar. Minutes later, the Hammerheads took the lead as Steres finished into the back of the net off a corner kick from midfielder Tom Parratt. Steres is currently the leading scorer for the Wilmington Hammerheads this season with five goals after Saturday night’s contest.
Harrisburg found their first attempt of the night off the foot of forward Lucky Mkosana, who took a long shot from outside the penalty area after crossing Hammerheads goalkeeper Troy Hernandez before rolling out of bounds.
The second half became more physical as both teams were eager to gain the upper hand in possession. After a consistent battle to find the back of the net, Harrisburg’s Touray tied the game in the 74th minute as he put home the rebound after Morgan Langley’s initial shot had been blocked by Hernandez.
Both teams pushed to find a winner, and one would arrive in the 90th minute as the Hammerheads took their second goal of the match. Bryce Taylor created the chance as he carried the ball from midfield to the corner for a cross that found Arnoux for a header to secure the victory.
