BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The Southern West Virginia King's Warriors won their second straight contest on Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory over the West Virginia Chaos at Carter Field in Beckley. The King's Warriors' win allowed Southern West Virginia to capture the annual Coal Cup Clash series with the Chaos for the first time in club history. The King's Warriors defeated the Chaos twice this season in the three-game series to take the Coal Cup Clash trophy for a year. The Chaos won the inaugural Coal Cup Clash series last season.
Southern West Virginia scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead through the first 34 minutes. Curt Hays scored his second in as many games off an unselfish assist by Billy Forbes to cap off a two-on-none break in the 15th minute.
The King's Warriors made it 2-0 in the 34th minute as Forbes placed a perfect shot into the lower-right corner of the Chaos goal past West Virginia goalkeeper Tyler Atwell.
The Chaos (4-5-2) closed the gap as leading scorer James Pucci headed in his ninth goal of the season off an assist by Jose Noriega to make it 2-1 at the half.
Both teams had chances in the second half, but Southern West Virginia (3-4-0) got its third goal in the 80th minute for a 3-1 advantage. Joe Jackson made a 60-yard run at full steam, worked his way around a Chaos defender and found Zari Prescod all alone in front of an open net.
Southern West Virginia goalie Stephen Moffitt earned his first win while facing eight shots and making two saves.
NEXT HOME GAME: The King's Warriors will meet the Virginia Beach Paranhas at home on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Carter Field at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex.
