CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery (7-3-4) will host VSI Tampa Bay FC (7-5-1) this Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kickoff is set for 7:30 PM. Saturday night is Christmas in June presented by Rick Hendrick Automotive Group to benefit Toys for Tots. Fans who bring a new unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots will receive free admission to the game.
The Battery are coming off a 1-1 draw against the Rochester Rhinos last Sunday afternoon. The draw was the Battery’s third in five games as they now sit in a tie for third in the USL PRO standings. Former College of Charleston defender, Shawn Ferguson, scored his first goal of his professional career as he tallied the equalizer for the Battery with a volley past Rochester’s goalkeeper early in the second half.
The Rhinos goalkeeper, Kristian Nicht played an excellent game and was able to hold off the Battery attack late in the match to get the 1-1 draw.
2013 is VSI Tampa Bay’s inaugural season in USL PRO, and this will be the first ever meeting between the two squads. Although it is the first ever meeting between the two sides, there will be some familiar faces out on the pitch on Saturday. Tampa Bay players Tony Donatelli, Sallieu Bundu, and Kyle Hoffer were all features for the Charleston Battery’s 2012 championship squad, although Hoffer is unlikely to be available due to injury.
Tampa Bay currently has 22 points and is in sole possession of fifth place in the USL PRO standings. The Charleston Battery have 25 points and are in a tie for third place with the Richmond Kickers.
