TAMPA, Fla. – The W-League announced its Team of the Week for Week 5 of the 2013 season today, honoring Seattle Sounders Women goalkeeper Erin McNulty as Player of the Week after she backstopped the Sounders to a 2-0-1 week on the road.
McNulty, a former Florida State and Penn State standout who led the Nittany Lions to the 2012 NCAA College Cup finals, started the week with seven saves, including a game-saver in the final minute, as the Sounders Women defeated the LA Strikers 2-1 on Wednesday. Seattle traveled to Santa Clarita Friday, where McNulty recorded nine saves in another 2-1 win, before finishing the trip at Pali Sunday, where McNulty made six saves to shut out the 2012 league runners-up in a scoreless draw.
McNulty’s teammate, Melissa Busque, stood out at both midfield and forward this past week to earn selection, putting in three dominating performances and scoring at Santa Clarita during the undefeated road trip.
Toronto’s Kadeisha Buchanan leads the defensive selections, having filled in at forward and scored the game-winner against London before leading the Lady Lynx to their fifth consecutive shutout in a scoreless draw against Ottawa. Buchanan is joined by Pali’s Elizabeth Eddy, who led the way in a shutout vs. Seattle, and Carolina Elite’s Blakely Mattern, who assisted on the game-winning goal as the Cobras defeated Atlanta to take the Southeastern Conference lead.
Virginia Beach had a pair of players chosen after posting back-to-back wins at New Jersey and North Jersey, with Meaghan Dullea selected in the midfield after her two goals were the difference at North Jersey and Shan Jones chosen at forward following a two-goal performance of her own against the Wildcats. London midfielder Chantelle Campbell scored a stoppage-time equalizer against Quebec City to earn her spot, and Charlotte’s Leah Fortune was selected in the midfield for the second consecutive week after her goal led the Lady Eagles past VSI Tampa Bay.
Long Island’s Grace Hawkins and North Jersey’s Danielle Schulmann both tallied two goals and an assist in their teams’ victories this past week to lead the forwards, and they are joined by Virginia Beach’s Shan Jones, who scored twice in the Piranhas’ 4-1 win at New Jersey.
