CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery (6-3-2) will conclude a five-game home stretch on Saturday night with a game against Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo Reserves (4-1-0). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium.
Saturday night is Irish Night at Blackbaud Stadium presented by Molly Darcy’s Irish Pub. There will be bagpipe players, Irish dancers, and a Hurling exhibition at halftime. In addition, the stadium concessions will be featuring a 16 oz Guinness Draft or Magners (Irish Cider) draft for only $5.
The Battery are coming off a rainy Wednesday night match in which they played to a 2-2 tie with nearby rival, the Charlotte Eagles. Heviel Cordoves was a big contributor in the match with a beautiful goal in the second half to tie the game up and an assist to Dane Kelly just minutes later to give the Battery the lead.
Charleston was able to maintain the lead going into stoppage time but Charlotte continued to attack and found an equalizer of their own in the waning minutes of extra time when midfield Drew Yates snuck a header past the Battery goalkeeper.
The Houston Dynamo are a familiar opponent for the Charleston Battery, having traveled to Charleston three times to participate in the annual Carolina Challenge Cup at Blackbaud Stadium. The Dynamo were back-to-back champions in 2006 and 2007. In addition the teams have met on several occasions in the U.S. Open Cup.
The Battery defeated the Dynamo Reserves in their first meeting this past May by a score of 1-0, behind Dane Kelly, who volleyed home Emmanuel Adjetey’s cross late in the first half. The loss was the Dynamo Reserve’s first and only of the season. The Dynamo Reserves currently sit in first place in the MLS Reserve League East Division with 12 points.
