HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders took their third consecutive victory as they defeated the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Skyline Sports Complex. The victory moved the Islanders within a point of Orlando City at the top of the USL PRO standings.
Neither side was able to gain the upper hand in the first half as both the City Islanders and Hammerheads looked to control possession. The City Islanders had a number of chances to take the lead, working combinations around the top of the penalty area, but were unable to finish. The Islanders had six shots on goal while the Hammerheads had only two.
The City Islanders gained the upper hand early in the second half as a defensive clearance from a corner deflected off Wilmington goalkeeper Phil Tuttle and into the net, giving Harrisburg a 1-0 lead. The game would increase in physicality as it progressed, and with 20 minutes to go the Hammerheads were reduced to 10 men as Daniel Steres was sent off for pulling down Harrisburg's Stephen Basso.
Five minutes later, Coady Andrews added a second for the Islanders as he was able to recover the rebound of his header off a corner by Cris Hernandez and fired home a finish into the left side of the net. Harrisburg was able to close out the game, and earn their eighth victory of the season, as they neared the midway point of the season.
The Islanders play their next four games at the Skyline Sports Complex, with the next contest coming on Saturday night as they host the Colorado Rapids Reserves at 7 p.m. ET. For tickets and more information visit the website at www.cityislanders.com or phone the box office at 717-441-4625.
