WATERLOO, Ont. - The reigning W-League Champion Ottawa Fury continued their perfect start to the 2013 season with a 2-0 victory against K-W United Sunday afternoon at Laurier's University Stadium.
Amanda Fancher opened the scoring for Ottawa in the 21st minute, heading home a Holly Hein free kick - a lead the Fury took into halftime. It remained a one-goal game until Emily Gielnik scored in her third consecutive game 10 minutes from time as Ottawa improved to 3-0-0 this season with Jasmine Phillips collecting her 28th career shutout with Ottawa.
With less than 24 hours to recover from their 4-1 victory against the London Gryphons, Coach Dom Oliveri's squad came out with plenty of energy to start the match against K-W United, which ended the Fury's 17-game unbeaten streak early last season.
The Fury opened the scoring thanks to Hein's free kick to Fancher. Gielnik produced a scoring opportunity late in the first half, but her 40-yard free kick was knocked off the crossbar and out as Ottawa carried a one-goal lead into the half.
In the second half the Fury looked to extend their lead, but were unable to find an insurance marker in the early stages thanks to a defense-first approach from K-W United. Ottawa eventually found the breathing room it was looking for 10 minutes from time thanks to Gielnik.
For the fourth time in five years the Fury have opened the W-League season with three wins and currently sit atop the Central Conference standings at 3-0-0. Gielnik now sits tied for first among league scorers with three goals and second in points with six. Phillips collected her second clean sheet of the season and is now tied for first in the league in shutouts.
The Fury will next take to the field on June 8 when they travel down the 401 to face their rivals - the Toronto Lady Lynx. The Fury will return home for the home opener on June 12 against the Laval Comets, where they will unveil the 2012 W-League Championship banner in a special pre-game ceremony.
