LONDON, ON - For the second straight game it was a three-goal second half performance that led the Fury to victory as the London Gryphons became the latest victims of the Fury's offensive prowess. Liz Milne, Emily Gielnik, and Taylor Uhl each scored in the second half to give the Fury a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Ottawa carried a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to Karen Gurnon's first with the Fury, but they got an early wake-up call in the second half when the Gryphons equalized only minutes into the restart. A trio of goals would turn the game in the Fury's favor as Liz Milne put the Fury back in front, Emily Gielnik extended their lead and Taylor Uhl capped of the second half scoring as the Fury downed they Gryphons 4-1 to improve to 9-0-0 lifetime against the London side.
Having not lost to London in eight previous meetings it was the Fury that got on the score sheet first at the North London Stadium. Karen Gurnon opened the scoring in the 17th minute, her first in Fury colours, becoming the first player to score for Ottawa in the opening half this season. Ottawa carried the lion's share of the possession in the first half, but London never stopped running with them and always had plenty of players behind the ball to thwart several Fury attacks. Gurnon's goal stood as the only goal in the first frame as Ottawa carried the one-goal lead into half.
While the Fury had a very successful second half in their season opener in Quebec City scoring all three of their goals in the second frame, they got caught off guard by the Gryphons who equalized mere minutes into the restart. After being named to the W-League Team of the Week last week for her defensive play, Liz Milne showed off her offensive capabilities restoring the Fury's lead. One could argue that the Gryphons' eqaulizer awoke the Fury's offensive as Milne's reply spawned wave after wave of chances for the Fury. Emiliy Gielnik put the game out of reach in the 76th minute with her second in as many games making it 3-1. Eleven minutes later Taylor Uhl would cap off another strong second half performance for Ottawa also scoring for the second straight game as the Fury leave London with all three points and a 4-1 victory. Britt Eckerstrom collected the victory, her first, in the Ottawa goal.
Ottawa takes over top spot in the W-League Central Conference with their 2-0-0 record and will have a chance to extend their first place lead Sunday afternoon at Laurier University when they face K-W United (0-0-2). K-W United (formerly Hamilton FC Rage) ended the Fury's 17-game unbeaten streak early last season and have opened the 2013 season with two draws.O
