GREENVILLE, S.C. – Blakely Mattern and Tiff Turpin led the Carolina Elite Cobras their second win in a week against VSI Tampa Bay on Sunday afternoon, each scoring a goal in a 2-1 victory.
The Cobras got on the board early against Tampa Bay when Turpin found the back of the net off a Cobras corner in the 14th minute, slipping one just past Tampa Bay goalkeeper Morgan Cresant. The game continued to build with both teams taking several shots on goal, including a sliding shot taken by Tampa Bay’s Sharla Pasariello that was saved by Cobras keeper Rose Hull, but the Cobras kept their leading going into halftime 1-0.
The beginning of the second half started with several lineup changes for VSI Tampa Bay, including goalkeeper Che Brown coming in for Cresant. With four fresh legs on the field, VSI Tampa Bay began to pressure the Cobras defense with Tampa Bay eventually tying the game in the 68th minute when Cara Patterson got on the end of a Tampa Bay corner kick.
With both teams looking to break the tie it was teamwork from Turpin and Mattern that gave the Cobras the advantage. After a ball crossed in was hit by Turpin toward the goal, it landed in front of Mattern in the six-yard box and she finished it for the winning goal in the 83rd minute.
The Cobras will be at home again on Wednesday with a game against the Charlotte Eagles at 7:30 p.m. at MESA Soccer Complex.
