BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Westchester Flames opened their 2013 Super-20 League season with a 2-0 loss against Beachside FC. The Flames, who made their Super-20 debut in 2011, advanced to the championships in 2012.
With this level of success, expectations were high entering the season and it was difficult to start with a loss.
"In the first two years, we did not lose our opening game," Flames Head Coach Joao de Souza said. "We won the opening game in the first season, tied it in the second season, and now in our third season we’ve lost the opening game. We had an undefeated season in 2012 and this loss shows us that we need to improve and learn from this so that we can capture positive results."
Beachside SC opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a goal by Jon-Luke Ferrandino off an assist by Alex Petridis. Beachside picked up the second in the 56th minute with a goal by Ryan Gavey, assisted by Rocco D’Arcangelo.
"We had our chances, but just couldn’t convert them", de Souza said. "If you look at the stats, Beachside had a slight edge in each area such as passes, possession, etc. This was the difference in the game and we need to play at a higher level to have another successful season."
The Westchester Flames Super-20 League team will play its next game against Ironbound SC at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at City Park Stadium in New Rochelle, N.Y.
