NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The New York Magic topped longtime cross-town rival and last year's division champion Long Island Rough Riders 2-0 Saturday evening with a pair of second-half goals from Sade Ayinde and Lorena Maggio to move to 2-0-1 this season.
After a first half in which both sides took four shots, the Magic finally broke the stalemate in the 63rd minute when former Rough Rider Ayinde scored her first goal of the season, converting from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. It was her first goal in a Magic uniform since 2007 when she played for the club as a teenager (2006-07). Ayinde had previously tallied a goal and assist against the Magic in 2011 for Long Island in a 5-1 win.
To leave no doubt, four minutes deep into stoppage time Australia's Maggio capped the game with the assistance of fourth-year Magic midfielder Aya Noguchi.
New York's back line trio of Ayaki Shinada, Kelci Hegg and Hikari Sato contributed significantly to the team's first shutout of the campaign.
New York will meet Long Island again next week in the second of their two meetings this season with the match set for Saturdaym June 1 at 5 p.m. on Long Island. Last year the Magic won the first meeting at home between the two as well with a narrow 1-0 decision, but fell in the next two with the Rough Riders prevailing at home twice 1-0 two weeks later and 6-2 later in the season.
