PORTLAND, Maine -- The MPS Portland Phoenix has brought in plenty of firepower with a talented group of forwards with new faces adding to some returning stars from the 2010 season.
A new face for the 2011 season is Charlie Rugg, a standout forward from Boston College. The Massachusetts native was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's First Team and was also a NSCAA Second Team All-Region selection. Accompanying Rugg is Parker Duncan from the University of Memphis. Duncan led the Tigers in individual points the last two seasons and was selected to the Conference USA All-Academic team after a strong season in 2010.
A third new face for the Phoenix this year is target forward Aaron Schoenfeld. The Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second Teamselection comes in following a strong season for East Tennessee State.
Returning to the Phoenix include attacker Bryan Gaul and Nick Weightman, who both contributed massively to the club's 2010 success. Gaul is a versatile player who comes in off the back of a standout year for Bradley which saw him selected to Missouri Valley Conference First Team and all Midwest Region First Team. Weightman returns after a very productive year in 2010 where he was an instrumental player scoring eight goals and adding two assists for the Phoenix.
The Phoenix have also added local talent in the form of Trevor Hoxsie, a former standout for Scarborough High Cchool before moving on to play for Utica College and being named an All-State and All-New England selection in 2009.
The MPS Portland Phoenix open the 2011 USL PDL Northeast division with a home game against the New Hampshire Phantoms at Deering High School on May 7th, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on matchdays, or for ticket packages contact Sam Maddams at sam@mainepremiersoccer.com.
