Wilmington Hammerheads News Release -- www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Thursday, May 2, 2013

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads will return to Legion Stadium on Friday night for their second home match of the season after suffering two defeats on the road last weekend in Los Angeles and Phoenix. The Hammerheads, with only three matches under their belt this season, are set to take on the Richmond Kickers at 7:30 p.m.

After catching flack over what might have been the quickest red card of the season, Hammerheads veteran Paul Nicholson has been put on a two-game suspension after committing a hard foul in Los Angeles after only 18 seconds into the first half of the match. Nicholson served the first game of his suspension during the match in Phoenix on Sunday and will serve his second this Friday against the Kickers.

It was a weekend of red cards for the Hammerheads as midfielder Shawn Nicklaw received one during Sunday night’s match in Phoenix. Nicklaw has been placed on a three-game suspension and will be unable to play until Saturday, May 18 when the Hammerheads take on Los Angeles for a second time this season at Legion Stadium.

Friday will be the Hammerheads’ first encounter with the Kickers in the 2013 USL PRO regular season. The two teams last met at City Stadium during the quarterfinals of the 2012 USL PRO Playoffs when the Hammerheads defeated the Kickers 3-2 in the final minute of stoppage time for a spot in the semifinals.

The match Friday night at Legion Stadium is the same night that locally filmed Marvel’s Iron Man 3 will release in theaters throughout the country. Iron Man 3 is predicted to be the biggest blockbuster of the year and was filmed in several locations throughout Wilmington and Screen Gem Studios. Some filming locations that can be distinctly recognized in the movie, such as the Port of Wilmington, are located only minutes from Legion Stadium.

Friday night’s match has been dubbed ‘Superhero Night’ in honor of the release of the film. Not only will we be celebrating the release, but we will also be honoring our real hometown heroes in the community – firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, etc. – for all that they do to keep the safety and save lives every day. Come dressed as your favorite superhero (action or hometown) and have a chance to win some great prize packs and join the fun.
