CAROLINA, Puerto Rico – A lone goal by Lawson Robinson proved enough as Antigua Barracuda FC earned its third consecutive victory in USL PRO with a 1-0 win against River Plate Puerto Rico at the Estadio Roberto Clemente Walker on Friday night.
In a very close game River had more control of the ball, but were unable to find any serious deep penetration of a compact Barracuda defense that kept its shape well and limited River to forcing just one save from Antigua goalkeeper Keith DeCastro.
After a scoreless first half, Antigua took the lead in the 56th minute through Robinson and was able to make it count. Barracuda too was limited in its opportunities as it sent long balls to try and find its forwards, but Robinson was able to take advantage as River's defense lost concentration for a moment, and his shot found the net.
River become more agressive with the entrance of Eloy Matos and Francois Frantz, but the last line of Antigua defense controlled every dangerous situation.
The Barracuda have now pulled within a point of the Los Angeles Blues at the top of the International Division, while River is still in search of its first victory of the USL PRO season.
Antigua concludes its three-game road trip in Los Angeles on Sunday night at Cal-State Fullerton’s Titan Stadium at 8 p.m. EST before welcoming River for a pair of games next Thursday and Sunday at the Sticky Wicket Stadium in St. John’s, Antigua.
