WILMINGTON, N.C. – As most of the teams in USL PRO have already begun their season in the prior weeks, the Wilmington Hammerheads will officially commence their 2013 USL PRO regular season on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. as they host Antigua Barracuda FC at Legion Stadium. The Hammerheads completed preseason on Monday with a 2-1 victory against the Carolina Railhawks, finishing with an overall record of 6-1-1.
The Hammerheads not only begin their season playing Antigua at home, they will also close their year against the same opposition on August 17 at Legion – the only team they will play twice on their home turf during regular season play. Friday’s match against Antigua will be Wilmington’s first of their 14 scheduled regular season home games this season.
Coming off a solid season in 2012, Head Coach David Irving and the squad are looking to come out onto the pitch setting high standards early in the new season. With veteran players Paul Nicholson, Gareth Evans, and Assistant Coach Mark Briggs returning along with a number of second-year players, the experience on the field is heavy.
Hammerheads supporters will be introduced to new, season-long partnerships when they pass through the entrance of Legion Stadium this year. Locally owned and popular Wilmington restaurant, Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn, will have their Sacred Burrito Bus food truck parked pitch-side in ‘LandShark Landing’. Across the way will be the newly added Kickin’ Kids Zone which features a large, inflatable bounce house courtesy of Monkey Joe’s, along with other activities.
Friday night’s match is sponsored by Stevenson Automotive Group of Wilmington. The gates open to the public promptly at 6 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the front gate or online at www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com. Supporters can also catch all the action via live stream on UNATION at www.uslnation.com.
