PLAINVIEW, N.Y. - Vaila Barsley, who played for the Long Island Rough Riders from 2009-10 and again in 2012, has made the next step in her career.

In February, the former St. John’s women’s soccer standout made the transatlantic voyage for the second time in her career, this time to play professionally for Sweden’s Eskilstuna United. After two months of pre-season workouts and training, Barsley and Eskilstuna will begin a seven-month schedule that will keep the English native in Sweden until mid-October.

“Vaila is an extremely talented player," Rough Riders Vice President Flavio Ferri said. "We, the Long Island Rough Riders, would like to congratulate her and wish her nothing but the best of luck in her career.”

Barsley completed her five-year accounting bachelor’s/master’s degree in accounting from St. John’s University in 2011. She starred on the back line for the Rough Riders in 2012, earning selection to the 2012 W-League All-League Team.

Barsley, a right-footed center back, had a successful career at St. John’s, where she was a part of the first Red Storm team to reach the NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament, in 2009. Barsley was named to the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Northeast Region second team, the 2006 All-Big East third team and the 2006 NSCAA Freshman All-American third team.
