CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery have added three players to the club's roster prior to the start of the USL PRO season. Midfielder Zach Prince returns to the Battery for a fourth season while defender Shawn Ferguson and forward Austin Savage arrive for their rookie pro seasons, pending USSF approval.
“Zach, Shawn and Austin all bring a local flavor to the Battery," Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser said. "Prince comes back for his fourth season to give us midfield depth while rookies Ferguson and Savage help solidify our defensive and offensive ranks”.
A native of Columbia, S.C., Prince has won two USL championships with the Charleston Battery in 2010 and 2012. Prince has played 64 games for the Battery with two goals and two assists. The 24-year-old Prince, 6-foot-0, 175 pounds, was a four-year starter with the College of Charleston and attended Irmo High School in Columbia, S.C.
Ferguson played four years at the College of Charleston after attending Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, SC. The 22-year-old rookie, 6-foot-3, 175 lbs., impressed at the Charleston Battery player trials and featured for the Battery on trial during the Carolina Challenge Cup tournament.
Savage joins the Battery after playing four years at Clemson University. A native of Summerville, S.C. the 21-year-old Savage, 5-foot-9, 175 lbs., attended Stratford High School where he scored a school record 113 goals. Last summer, he also played for the PDL's Palmetto FC Bantams, scoring four goals and adding an assist in 14 appearances.
While he was at Stratford High School Savage also played for the Charleston Battery’s affiliate USSF Development Academy team, Bridge FA from 2007-09 coached by Academy Director Clark Brisson and becomes the first Battery Academy player to sign a full pro contract with the Charleston Battery.
Battery to open USL PRO season in Richmond, Va.
The Charleston Battery will open the defense of its USL PRO championship in Richmond, Va. with a match versus long-time rival the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, April 13; kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Charleston Battery home opener is set for Saturday, April 20 against Antigua Barracuda FC at Blackbaud Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m. – kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ($10 - $18, 843-971-4625 / www.charlestonbattery.com).
