BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Southern West Virginia King's Warriors' Head Coach Scott Reitnour is pleased to report that nine players from the club's 2012 inaugural season will be returning as team members in 2013.
Among the key players returning are defenders Harry Sherwood and Carter Robbins, along with goalkeeper Erik Mozzo. Other returnees include forward Jorge Martinez, midfielders Stephen Millage, Mark Mitchell and Bennie Bardales, and defenders Byron Ramirez Knowles and Jordan Devlin.
Sherwood finished the 2012 season tied as the King's Warriors' second-leading scorer with three goals and six points. A tenacious defender, Sherwood also displayed the knack to go forward and jump into the final third when the opportunity presented itself. Sherwood's play last season with Southern West Virginia also earned him a tryout with the King's Warriors affiliate in USL PRO, the Charlotte Eagles.
"I'm really looking forward to sharing another summer with the King's Warriors, to carry on from where we left off last season off the field, and to improve from the foundation we laid on the field," said Sherwood. "It's going to be a great summer for everyone involved."
Another returning defender who showed a flair for offense last season is Robbins. The 19-year old will always be known for scoring the first goal in Southern West Virginia's home opener last May against the Nashville Metros. Robbins had three goals and six points for the King's Warriors, tying three teammates for second place in the team's scoring parade.
Mozzo started 14 of the King's Warriors' 16 games last season, posting an excellent 1.40 goals against average while earning four shutouts. The former two-season Clemson Tigers goalkeeper transferred to Lubbock Christian University this past fall. Mozzo played in 11 games for the Golden Eagles going 5-3-1 and sporting a 1.58 goals against average.
"I'm very excited to be coming back to join the King's Warriors for the club's second season," said Mozzo. "We have laid the foundation and now it's time to build on that foundation. I feel that everything is up to speed and we can progress quicker as a collective group of men and soccer players."
