CARY, N.C. -- The Charleston Battery defeated the Carolina RailHawks 2-1 in a preseason scrimmage played Thursday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Battery jumped out to a two-goal lead before halftime thanks to goals from midfielders Quinton Griffith, pictured, and Michael Azira. After conceding midway though the second half the Battery held firm to take the win.

Charleston opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a superbly taken goal by Griffith. Jose Cuevas and Jarad van Schaik combined on the right side and slipped a pass through to Griffith, who drilled a shot past the RailHawks goalkeeper from an acute angle.

The Battery doubled their lead on the 30-minute mark after Azira ran onto an errant clearance. Azira hit a first-time shot from 20 yards out that whistled just inside the far post.

The RailHawks pulled a goal back on the 70-minute mark after a spell of pressure but were unable to find an equalizer in the final 20 minutes.

The Charleston Battery continue their preseason schedule next Tuesday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. match against the College of Charleston at Patriots Point.

All preseason home games are free to attend except for Saturday, March 23rd against the Wilmington Hammerheads. Tickets for this rematch of the 2012 USL PRO Championship will be $7 for bleacher seats and $12 for club seats with group discounts available; to purchase tickets or for more information please visit www.charlestonbattery.com or call (843) 971-GOAL (4625).
