DAYTON, Ohio - The Dayton Dutch Lions FC are happy to announce the return of Wright State’s Emilie Fillion and Sarah Gross, Xavier’s Taylor Dearbaugh and Northern Kentucky’s Kelsey Zwergel for the 2013 W-League season.
Fillion, a forward, was selected to the Horizon League’s 2012 All-Tournament Team after scoring seven goals and adding three assists in 20 games. She took a total of 40 shots, 19 on goal.
“With her work ethic and high level of mobility Fillion will fit perfectly in the style of play we want to apply," Dutch Lions Head Coach Sid van Druenen said. "She was our top scorer last season and I expect her to do the same this year.”
Gross, a midfielder, played in 18 games during her college season, scoring three goals and registering 12 shots.
“Gross has a great mentality and always expects the best from herself, her teammates and her coaches. That’s exactly the mentality I expect from my players," van Druenen said. "It will be her third year with the club so she knows what to expect from the league. With her technique and creativity she is the kind of midfielder that can decide a game for us.”
Also a midfielder, Dearbaugh played and started in all 19 games for Xavier on 2012, scoring once and registering 25 shots.
“Dearbaugh has great technique," van Druenen said. "Her first touch, vision and passes are great. It is my expectation that this will create a lot of chances for us and she should be one of the top players in this league when it comes to assists.”
Zwergel, a defensive midfielder, started all 17 games for Northern Kentucky, registering 36 shots. She scored twice and added three assists.
“Zwergel has everything I look for in a controlling midfielder: speed, strength, great ball stealer, good positioning and she has a good shot from distance," van Druenen said. "I expect her to be an leader for this team!”
van Druenen is excited about having the quartet back for the 2013 W-League season.
“All of the [players] mentioned above had the level of commitment and determination that we expect from our players and I am happy that they will be playing for the Dutch Lions again for the upcoming season," he said. "For the continuity of the program it is important that we have some returning players for the 2013 season, as they know me, the club and the league. I expect every one of these players to set an example for all the new players.”
The Dutch Lions W-League team will open the 2013 regular season on the 25 of May at Beavercreek High School against the Charlotte Lady Eagles. For more information please visit www.dutchlionsfc.com.
