CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery looked bigger and faster at the start of the match against the young College of Charleston Cougars, and cruised to a 3-0 victory at Patriots Points on Wednesday afternoon. Dane Kelly scored a pair of goals, while Quinton Griffith scored the opener, as the Battery opened their nine-game preseason slate with a comfortable victory.
The experienced Battery were comfortably in control throughout the first half, and put pressure on the Cougars' goal early as they forced Cougars goalkeeper Alex Young to sprint off his line to cut off the angle and force Kelly to miss an opportunity from close range. About midway through the half, however, the Battery would take the lead as Griffith ripped a shot top right to give the Battery a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after, Kelly received a nice slotted pass from Ryan Richter in the penalty area and finished it beautifully into the left-side netting for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Richter and Kelly connected again in the second half to give the Battery a 3-0 advantage as Richter broke free down the right side of the pitch and played a nice cross in that Kelly headed home for the goal.
The Battery continued to move the ball well for most of the second half as they claimed a comfortable victory, their second of the preseason following a win against Houston Dynamo in the final game of the Carolina Challenge Cup last Saturday.
Next up the Battery will travel to Clemson, S.C. on Saturday to take on Clemson University in a preseason match at 3 p.m. ET.
