NEWARK, N.J. -- The Jersey Express are pleased to announce the appointment of former Jersey Express player and current assistant coach of St. Johns University, Jeff Matteo, as the new Head Coach of the Jersey Express.
Matteo is in his sixth season as an assistant coach at his alma mater, St. Johns University. Matteo returned following a five-year professional career that included time spent in both the United States and Italy.
Matteo concluded his professional career with a three-year stint in the USL First Division. The midfielder spent the 2006 season with the Charleston Battery and Miami FC already having spent with the Minnesota Thunder (2004-05). Matteo earned second team All-League honors in 2005 with the Thunder.
Prior to his USL career, Matteo spent two seasons in Major League Soccer as a member of the Columbus Crew and the Metrostars. Drafted by Columbus as the 20th overall selection in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft, Matteo first traveled abroad to play in the Italian Third Division (Serie C1) with Monza.
“I’m very honored to be part of the Jersey Express organization again," said Matteo, who played with the Express in 2010. "It is one of the premier PDL programs in the country and I am excited for the season.”
“Jeff was always a standout player during my time with the Brooklyn Knights and the Jersey Express," said Jersey Express General Manager Gali Maimon. "He was not only a leader on the field but a mentor to all the younger players. We look forward to having him back to continue his leadership and mentorship in his new role as head coach.”
Matteo will begin his career as Head Coach against the new PDL franchise, the F.A. Euro - New York Magic on Sunday, May 19th at 5 p.m. The game will take place at NJIT Stadium, the home of the Jersey Express. If you are interested in trying out for the Jersey Express 2013 season, click here.
