DAYTON, Ohio – The Rochester Rhinos earned their first victory of the USL PRO season as Alfonso Motagalvan, J.C. Banks and Anthony Hamilton each scored in a hard fought 3-2 win against the Dayton Dutch Lions FC on a rainy Saturday night at Miami Valley South Stadium.
The Dutch Lions started out strongly and took the lead early through a header by forward George Davis IV after a good cross by Julius Willie. The Rhinos hit back quickly through Motagalvan to tie the game, though, and Banks gave Rochester the lead in first-half stoppage time.
Rochester added to its lead in the second half as Hamilton made the score 3-1. With time winding down and weather conditions worsening for the second straight week, the intensity on the field increased, and the Dutch Lions pulled a goal back in the 88th minute as Kyle Sebegart latched onto a pass from Joe Tait before finishing.
Dayton also came close to finding an equalizer in stoppage time, but Tait was unable to find the back of the net.
“Overall the Rhinos deserved the win,” Dutch Lions owner Mike Mossel said. “We were sloppy in the back and we created their goals ourselves. If we had the solid defense we had in the second half we would have won. Despite not reaching our level for the larger part of the game we still could have tied the match the same as last week’s.
“Joe Tait’s header was cleared of the line and his free kick just went wide by an inch. It would have been great for the team and the staff to get a tie after working so hard, but I’m confident if we keep progressing and we take those mistakes out of the back we will have a great season.”
The Dutch Lions will try to earn their first victory in next Saturday’s match against Richmond at home at 7.30 p.m. For more information and tickets visit www.dutchlionsfc.com and follow on Facebook and Twitter @Daytondutchlion.
