SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Santa Clarita Blue Heat, the 2011 W-League Western Conference regular season champions, are pleased to announce the appointment of Anthony Rodwell as the club’s new coach for the 2013 season.
Rodwell is a former professional player who played for five seasons in England with Blackpool from 1990-94. A midfielder, Rodwell helped his side reach promotion to League One as the Seasiders took victory against Scunthorpe United in a penalty shootout in the League Two Playoff final at Wembley.
Rodwell played in more than 600 professional and semi-professional soccer games throughout his career and holds a UEFA “B” coaching license issued by the English Professional Footballers Association. He will bring a fresh perspective to the club for the upcoming season.
“Tony is a great guy and I have all the trust in the world in him,” Blue Heat owner Carlos Marroquin said.
In addition to coaching, Rodwell also works a floor manager for Premier League Promotions, organizing live television broadcasts and pre- and post-match interviews for matches in the Barclay’s Premier League. Rodwell also played a role in the production of the 2012 London Olympics, managing all of the contests played at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, including the women’s semifinal that saw the U.S. Women’s National Team take a 4-3 victory against Canada on their way to a gold medal.
Rodwell will also be joined by his daughter, Stacey, who returns to the Blue Heat for her fourth season this summer. Stacey Rodwell scored three goals in six appearances for Santa Clarita in the 2012 W-League season.
The Blue Heat will open the 2013 W-League season on May 25 when they visit new franchise the Bay Area Breeze in San Francisco. The side will open its home schedule on Friday, May 31 when it hosts the LA Strikers at The Master’s College at 5 p.m. PT.
