TUCSON, Ariz. — FC Tucson announced today that Seattle Sounders FC will play Mexico’s Veracruz in a preseason friendly on Friday, February 22. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and be held at Kino North Field 5.
“We’re excited about our first foray into Mexican professional soccer because we understand the passion for Mexican futbol in Southern Arizona is massive and this is very important to us,” said FC Tucson co-managing member Greg Foster. “Fans will get to see one of MLS’s best clubs prepare for the CONCACAF Champions League against a challenging Mexican side in Veracruz.”
Club Deportivo Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, also known as Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, is a Mexican professional soccer club that currently plays in Ascenso MX, Mexico’s second division. Their nickname in English is “Red Sharks” and the club has won a total of three league titles and one Mexican Cup title. Veracruz is currently second in Ascenso MX.
“This is good preparation for our match against Tigres,” said Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “It’s important to play another team from Mexico and we are very thankful that Veracruz is able to do so. It’s a good opportunity for our team to play against that style of play because it is different than what we face in MLS.”
