CHARLESTON, S.C. -- There are still plenty of unknowns so early in the year, but with preseason camp just around the corner, Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser has high hopes for his 2013 squad.

“We are definitely going to see a few players back and a few new faces that will strengthen the team,” said Anhaeuser.

Preseason camp starts today and with 12 returning players, including Captain Colin Falvey and 2012 leading goalscorer Nicki Patterson, the Battery are potentially poised for another successful season. The rostered players will be joined by a handful of other talented players vying for the remaining spots on the team.

“Right now we are looking at about six to ten spots depending on our guys and depending on how we look at each position but it’s always important to have some flexibility,” Coach Anhaeuser noted.

As the team prepares for the Carolina Challenge Cup, coaches and players alike have their sites set on improving upon last year by winning the league and the championship. Although they won the USL PRO Championship, the Battery came in third in the league standings last year behind regular-season champion Orlando and Rochester.

The Carolina Challenge Cup featuring Major League Soccer is set for February 16 – February 23 at Blackbaud Stadium. The Battery will open the tournament with a game against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, February 16 at 7:15 p.m. They will then battle the Chicago Fire on Wednesday, February 20 at 7:15 p.m. and finish up the competition on Saturday, February 23 at 7:15 p.m. as they take on the Houston Dynamo.
