OCALA, Fla. – The Ocala Stampede announced today the appointment of Cheyne Roberts as the new head coach of its USL PDL team.

“At this point in my career and after speaking with the management, I cannot think of a better club to start with,” said Roberts. “I am excited to start building this team and to begin reaching the community through the Stampede.”

Roberts, a former professional player in USL PRO with the Charlotte Eagles, quickly moved to the college coaching ranks as an assistant with Division II program Palm Beach Atlantic. The 24-year-old Roberts has been an assistant coach under Jose Gomez since 2010. Roberts made 18 appearances for the Eagles in the 2012 USL PRO season, recording one assist while finishing sixth on the team in minutes.

“We’re very excited to have Cheyne as a part of the Ocala Stampede family. That he brings professional experience as a player and as a coach from the collegiate level makes him the ideal leader for the club’s future,” said Bill Reed, owner of the Ocala Stampede.

Roberts played with Palm Beach Atlantic from 2006-2010, having an impressive college career which included being honored as an NCCAA All-American and NCAA All-Region selection.

“The Stampede provide a great opportunity to make an impact in the league and also in the Open Cup,” Roberts said. “We want to play with an entertaining style and we want to try and bring out the best in each player, on and off the field. I want players that are trying to play at the next level and are passionate about their future.”
