TUCSON, Ariz. — Former FC Tucson players Eli Galbraith-Knapp, James Cohn and Michael D’Arrigo will be heading to the NCAA men’s soccer tournament after the University of San Diego clinched the West Coast Conference title on Friday night.
The Toreros held a two-point lead over Santa Clara in the conference standings, but after the Broncos finished a 0-0 draw with Loyola Marymount, San Diego needed a win to clinch the title. They got it in a 2-0 win over Saint Mary’s. Cohn and Galbraith-Knapp started the match but did not score a point.
The trio ended the regular season with a loss 3-2 loss to Santa Clara on Sunday, November 11. Cohn started the match but didn’t notch a point. D’Arrigo was the starting goalkeeper and made two saves in 45 minutes of play.
San Diego will travel to face Cal State Northridge in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday night, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. PT. The winner of that contest will visit No. 6 seed UCLA on Sunday night.
Lobos fall in heartbreaker
Going into the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament Final on Sunday, Travis Campbell and his back line mates hadn’t allowed a goal since October 12 in a 2-1 loss to Air Force. But that streak ended in heartbreaking fashion as that same Air Force team scored with 16 seconds remaining in regulation. The Lobos wound up losing the final 5-3 in penalty kicks. Campbell started and played in all 120 minutes of the tournament final but didn’t score a point.
Despite the loss, New Mexico still earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, with the Lobos being handed the No. 13 seed and a bye to the second round. They will face the winner of Thursday night's contest between Lafayette and Virginia.

Portland
The Pilots couldn’t finish the regular season with wins, but they did earn two draws in their final weekend. On Wednesday night, Portland drew 1-1 with Gonzaga. Midfielder Thomas Iwasaki started the match but didn’t score. On Sunday, the Pilots finished the year with a 0-0 draw with San Francisco. Iwasaki and midfielder Colin Anderson started the match but neither one found the score sheet.
San Francisco
Goalkeeper Brendan Roslund finished his collegiate career as well as a goalkeeper possibly can: back-to-back shutouts. On Friday night Roslund stonewalled Gonzaga in a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs. Then on Sunday, during his final collegiate match, Roslund shutout Portland in a 0-0 draw. Over the last two matches Roslund made seven saves to finish off his college career. Midfielder Danny Kirkland came off the bench in both matches but couldn’t notch a point.
Santa Clara
The Broncos ended the regular season on a positive note with a 3-2 win over San Diego on Sunday. Defender Wes Culver scored the first of Santa Clara’s three goals in the 39th minute. Forward Carlos Montes came off the bench but didn’t score a point. The win was a pick-me-up following a 0-0 draw with Loyola Marymount on Friday, which knocked the Broncos out of West Coast Conference title contention. Culver and Montes started the match but did not score.
UNLV
The Rebels’ season came to a close after a 4-2 loss to Air Force in the MPSF Tournament first round. Forward Nick Marshall started the match but didn’t score.
