MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – After celebrating by dropping the 2012 MISL Championship Banner, the Milwaukee Wave suffered their first loss of the season in overtime as the Missouri Comets took a 13-11 victory on Sunday afternoon on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Arena. Trailing by four points in the fourth quarter, the Comets rallied to first tie the game with 33 seconds to play though Will John before Coady Andrews scored an overtime game-winner to move his side to 3-0 this season.
Milwaukee’s Joe Hammes, who clinched the Wave’s sixth title with the final goal scored at the Cell last season, opened the scoring on a restart, giving the Wave a 2-0 lead. Missouri’s Byron Alvarez answered for the Comets, tying the game 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Comets then took the lead as Brian Harris found the back of the net to put his side up 4-2. The Wave answered back and took the lead as Luan Sales Oliviera fired in a 3-point goal, his first for the club, and they added to their lead as Pablo scored with six seconds left in the half to give the Wave a 7-4 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Comet’s Ryan Junge tied the game back up as he snuck in a 3-point goal near post early in the third quarter. The Wave’s Jonatan Santos restored the Wave’s lead, putting them up 9-7 before Jonathan Greenfield increased the Wave’s lead to 11-7 soon after. Alvarez quickly replied for the Comets, his second goal of the day cutting the Wave’s lead to 11-9.
After failing to take advantage of a late power play, the Comets were able to find John in space at the top of the penalty area with the sixth attacker on, allowing him the chance to send the game to overtime. Andrews then scored on a breakaway to complete Missouri’s comeback, rounding Wave goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra before he slotted home a finish into the net.
The Wave next head out on the road to face the Baltimore Blast on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. CT. They return to the U.S. Cellular Arena on December 1st as they take on the Chicago Soul. A special family 4-pack is available for the game. Season tickets, flex plans and single-game tickets are also on sale.
