ROCHESTER, NY – The Rochester Lancers defeated the Chicago Soul 18-16 in overtime on Saturday evening to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Lancers were led offensively by player/assistant coach Doug Miller who tallied four goals and nine points and Mauricio Salles who had two goals and an assist for a six point night. Rey “Boom Boom” Martinez would provide the overtime game winning goal for the hosts.
The Lancers got off to a strong start outscoring Chicago 6-0 in the first quarter. Salles opened the scoring when he put home a rebound off of an Ivory Washington shot. Miller then scored a pair of goals. The first was a penalty shootout goal after he was fouled by former Lancer William Kletzien. Then Miller scored off of a beautiful pass through the box from Troy Cole.
The second quarter was all Chicago with Cuitlahuac Meza and Carlos Munoz converting power play goals while Bato Radoncic added a third to even the score at 6-6 at the half.
The Soul extended their lead to 12-6 early in the third quarter as Meza, Munoz, and Radoncic each found the back of the net before Salles scored a 3-point goal just before the end of the quarter to pull the Lancers within three points at 12-9 heading into the final quarter of play.
There were plenty of fireworks in the fourth quarter. Miller tied it at 12-12 with a 3-point goal. Jeremy Ortiz put the Lancers back into the lead off of an assist from Salles. And then came the final two minutes of play. Roberto Gallo would score Chicago’s third powerplay goal of the evening to tie the game at 14-14. Miller scored his fourth of the night to give the Lancers the lead with under a minute left in regulation. However, Gallo would score his second of the night from Radoncic to send the game to overtime tied 16-16.
In the extra period, Luis Enrique found Martinez in front of net who turned and fired to give the Lancers the victory.
